COURSE  DETAILS

Sections of this trail are extremely rocky while others are super easy to run. There will be 5,300 feet of elevation  gain on this route with several overlooks and of course Ozone Falls. This time of year the flowers will be blooming and the leaves will be coming out. We hope this is the most beautiful 50k you have run!

History:
The Cumberland Trail became a state trail in 1971 and later a state park in 1998. It is over 300 miles in Length going from Cumberland Gap National park to Chattanooga along the Cumberland Plateau. Right now 2/3rds of the trail has been finished and the rest is being built with a few road walks and gaps here and there. The state park and the trail need our help. Our help to help build and close the gaps as well as to help keep what is built cleared. Really it needs foot traffic. A lot of the trail is somewhat remote as compared to big cities and towns. That is the beauty of it. IT goes into gorges, along creeks, over creeks and over mountains. So many people have come together to make the vision of this trail a reality. Currently they are so so so close to it being complete.

The course passes immediately by Ozone Falls before climbing up Black Mountain to give you a view of Grassy Cove, a beautiful enclosed valley. This valley is actually home to the nations largest sink hole at 8 miles by 3 miles. The entire valley and all its streams drain underground. Some of it flowing to the end of our race at the Devilstep Cave within Head of Sequatchie.  This will me the last 1/4 mile of the race for runners. There are 5 open view points along this race route.

From the race stand point… Run Bum Races owner and 300 time ultra runner, Sean Blanton began to explore more and more of the Cumberland trail around the Sequatchie valley over the last 7 years since he started flying his paraglider here. Flying up and down the valley, seeing it from a birds ye view, only made him want to explore more and more. “A couple of my flights I have flown the length of the valley and made it within a mile or two of the Head of Sequatchie. Its my favorite place eon earth. We local pilots call it Magic Valley.”
